Rainbow Café
The Rainbow Café is a hidden little rainbow, snug in the heart of Clifton, minus the evil leprechauns and pots of gold. It's easy to overlook this small place but well worth acknowledging. The café is staffed and run by an odd bunch of young and old who act as if you are guests in their living room come to visit for a bit of afternoon tea. If disorganisation makes you huff then best stick the big coffee chains, where your extra frothy macchiato comes with an extra stern glare. The lunch menu is isn't all that cop but you may as well try it out for some of their carrot cake.

01 Jul 2011I have been going to Rainbow Cafe for quite a few years off an on, and since the new owners have been there, there's a marked improvement all round. There's always a hearty choice of good hot food, well presented by interested staff. I invariably dine alone and whether I want three courses and wine or just a cheese scone, I feel that my custom is appreciated. I'm not sure that I understand all the art that they display, but I do know that they are enthusiastic about showcasing local talent, both artists and musicians. They also sell interesting books at charity shop prices. Clifton is slowly being taken over my multi-national coffee houses; Rainbow's stance is brave, fresh, just a bit quirky and deserves to succeed
