The British Empire and Commonwealth Museum
Hop over to Brunel's impressive 19th century Temple Meads railway station, and you're on track for a sombre afternoon. An exploration of Britain when it was a big colonial player and the sun never set on the old British empire, this museum plays particular (and commendable) attention to Bristol's less than glorious past as a key city in the British slave trade. It succeeds in teaching you a lot without boring you to tears and you'll see Whiteladies Road and Blackboy Hill in a completely different light afterwards.
