Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery
Housed in the magnificent building next to Bristol's Wills Memorial Building and home to a huge range of exhibitions, from fossils and archaeology to Egyptian artefacts, ceramics and modern art. There are new exhibitions popping up all the time making this free (yes, free) attraction essential to anyone who needs to gen up on their history. It's probably worth doing a couple of short visits rather than one great big cultural overload, though, as there's a lot to see.
