Out & About in Bristol

Monthly Slow Food market

Is shopping in your local supermarket starting to bring you out in panicky sweats? Wish you hadn't watched that Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall foray into chicken farming or Jamie's documentary on pigs? We hear you loud and clear.

In fact Itchy fears we're never going to be able to look at a roast dinner or a bacon sarnie in the same, loving way again.

Well, considering our new found phobia of the big chain supermarkets, Itchy have decided that this is the year that we're going to try out food markets. We know it'll be tough and secretly we'll be trying not to make a dash for our local Sainsbury's reduced section (the inspiration for many an evening meal) but we think we'll quite like the relaxed pace of market shopping.

Picture it now... decked out in Sunday best/ last night's smokey attire you could find yourself making like Little Red and swinging a wicker basket as you forage for nibbles amongst the colourful food stalls. Local cheeses, bacons and scrumpy will be top of our shopping lists and if it turns out our pockets aren't as deep as we thought, well, we might just try the old 'may I have a sample?' line. Then we'll just keep going round and round in a variety of cunning disguises –poirot beards, Dame Edna glasses et al until our bellies are full.

Thankfully the term Slow Food doesn't refer to the time it takes to buy but the amount of time it takes to grow, and lets face it we don't care about that as long as it doesn't slow the pace between it leaving the stall and being crammed into our eagerly waiting hamster cheeks.
