Famous Five adventures in Bristol

Good golly old chap, get out of that dastardly hole and join us for an adventure so spiffing it will knock that lemon sherbet right out of your gob.

First stop is Love Sport, an exhibition at the fine old Explore @ Bristol where you can get your hands dirty and your knees grazed over an interactive celebration that any strapping young man should find most riveting.

But it's not all fun and games when there are pirates on our shores! Book your ticket while your still at Explore and it's off to the harbour for a pirate walk that is sure to shiver those timbers something rotten. Takes place each Saturday and Sunday for a small fee.

Then on to the Clifton Observatory where an underground passage leads on to St Vincent's cave – a perfect stop to peer over the gorge for smugglers. And while you're at it, keep those eyes out for ghosts; rumour has it that the cave was once connected to a chapel which broke away from the cliff only to be submerged in to the depths beneath.

More savoury explorations are to be had back at St Nicholas' Market where you can pick up a wedge of cheese and some fizz. But don't get too comfortable, when there are slave traders roaming with malevolent intent. See how the trade made its mark on the walls of the nearby Corn Exchange.

But we're too wholesome and English to make any judgments against Empire.

What is needed for those tired legs is a good Bakewell tart and a milkshake from Shakeaway in Broadmead's mall. Whatever on earth is meant by lion bar flavour? Let's ponder it over a picnic in Cabbott Park where we can play a bit of catch with the dog and roll down the hill. I do rather love to end the day with roly-polys.
