Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
An epic of epic epicness? Pretty much, yeah.
Review
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is one of those films which is smeared with geek-hype. As with so many comic-books-turned-film we had high hopes, but not as high as those who had read and loved the Scott Pilgrim series of graphic novels. Believe us, we took one of them to the screening. He was REALLY excited.
Just in case you haven't read all six volumes from cover to dog-eared cover, we'll give you an overview. Scott Pilgrim is living the unemployed dream of dating a pretty seventeen-year-old (albeit minus any physical contact) and playing bass in a garage band, Sex Bob-omb. His life gets far more dramatic when hot delivery girl Ramona Flowers blades through his subconscious and an obsession begins. The trouble is, Ramona has seven evil exes who aren't too impressed by their budding romance.
This is probably the most original film we've seen since the turn of the century. Possibly before then. When you strip it down to the naked, hairless body of the situation, this is a teenager-likes-girl-and-tackles-obstacles-for-her-affection story. Chuck in the premise that their lives are (kind-of) in a computer game and you've got the potential for some mental special effects and some even more mental bit parts.
Of course what really makes the film special is some top quality casting. You'd think Michael Cera was simply the obvious choice for a slightly nerdy bass player but he really comes into his own this time, showing us the wonderful comic ability he nurtured in Arrested Development but that was lacking from the overrated Superbad. Kieran Culkin is classic (and, refreshingly, not the stereotypical pink hotpant genre of camp) as Scott's flatmate Wally, and Alison Pill delivers more laughs than lines as Kim, Sex Bob-omb's surly drummer.
The comedy is great, the romance is cute, the effects are top-notch and the storyline's different. There's not a reason that springs to mind for you not to see this film. In fact you'd be a bit of an idiot to miss it, because even if you find it all a bit much or just not your cup of tea (unlikely), you'd constantly be wondering what the rest of the world was on about. In fact, you could say it would be you vs. the world.
